The EPA Brownfields Program provides grants for the assessment, cleanup, and revolving-loan financing of contaminated former industrial, commercial, and abandoned sites. Brownfields work intersects directly with watershed protection where leaching contaminants from old industrial sites, abandoned gas stations, dry cleaners, scrap yards, or coal-related operations are threatening surface water or groundwater quality.Three primary grant tracks are available: Assessment Grants (up to $500,000) for inventorying and characterizing sites, Cleanup Grants (up to $1 million) for remediation, and Multipurpose Grants for communities tackling multiple sites at once. Eligible applicants include local governments, regional councils, tribes, and qualifying nonprofits.For SW PA watershed groups, Brownfields funding pairs naturally with restoration of post-industrial waterfronts, mill sites along the Mon and Allegheny, and small-town main street redevelopment that includes stormwater and stream restoration components. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law boosted Brownfields funding levels significantly through 2026 and beyond.
