Trout in the Classroom — Pennsylvania Program

Classroom-based environmental education program where students raise brook trout from eggs to fingerlings while learning about coldwater stream ecology.

Trout in the Classroom is a year-long environmental science program in which K-12 students raise native brook trout from eggs in a classroom aquarium, monitoring water quality throughout the process and eventually releasing fingerlings into approved Pennsylvania streams. The program is administered by PA Trout Unlimited with support from the Fish and Boat Commission and local TU chapters. Participating schools receive training, equipment guidance, and an egg supply each fall. Teachers typically combine the hands-on hatchery work with curriculum on stream ecology, macroinvertebrate identification, and native species conservation. Release-day field trips to local streams are often coordinated with watershed groups and TU volunteers.
