USDA NRCS Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP)

The Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) is the second pillar of USDA's working-lands conservation funding, designed for producers who have already met a baseline of conservation stewardship and want to expand and enhance their efforts. Where EQIP installs new practices, CSP pays for ongoing enhancement and management activities — cover crop diversity, integrated pest management, advanced nutrient management, prescribed grazing rotations, pollinator habitat enhancement, and similar elevated stewardship.Contracts run for five years and are renewable, providing a longer-horizon income stream for conservation-minded farmers than EQIP's project-based approach. Payments are calculated based on the conservation practices selected and the resource concerns addressed.For watershed groups, CSP is most useful when working with operators who are already engaged in conservation and ready to take the next step — those producers tend to be the early adopters who can demonstrate practices to neighbors and serve as on-farm demonstration sites. Watershed staff can support recruitment and provide outreach, while NRCS field offices handle eligibility, ranking, and contracting. CSP funding also got a significant Inflation Reduction Act boost.
