USDA NRCS Source Water Protection
Program Summary
NRCS assistance for actions that safeguard, maintain, or improve sources of drinking water and their contributing areas.
Full Description
NRCS defines source water protection as a broad set of actions aimed at safeguarding, maintaining, or improving sources of drinking water and their contributing areas. The 2018 Farm Bill directs NRCS to set aside a portion of EQIP and RCPP funds specifically for source water protection, delivered in partnership with drinking water utilities. That set-aside creates a direct pathway for water utilities and watershed nonprofits to partner with NRCS on upstream drinking water protection rather than competing for general conservation dollars.
