Program Summary

Independent freshwater research institute providing science-grade restoration design, EnviroDIY open-source water monitoring kits, the free Model My Watershed planning tool, and technical mentoring for watershed groups.

Full Description

Stroud Water Research Center, founded in 1967, is one of the few independent freshwater research institutes in the country and a long-time technical partner to community watershed organizations in the Mid-Atlantic. Their Watershed Restoration team designs and implements stream and riparian restoration projects, with a strong focus on the science behind why projects succeed or fail.Just as valuable for grassroots groups: Stroud builds and supports EnviroDIY, an open-source line of water quality monitoring sensor kits affordable enough for citizen science programs, and they host Model My Watershed — a free web-based GIS tool that lets a non-technical user model land use, runoff, and pollutant loading for any watershed in the U.S. Their education team also offers professional development for teachers building K-12 watershed curricula.Stroud is the rare expert organization that scales advice down to volunteer-run groups without losing scientific rigor.
