PA Water Trail Mini-Grant Program (2026 Cycle)
Program Summary
Competitive mini-grants of $1,000 to $7,000 for projects on any of Pennsylvania's 28 designated Water Trails, with applications due November 4, 2026.
Full Description
The Pennsylvania Environmental Council opened the 2026 PA Water Trails Mini-Grant cycle on September 22, 2026. Grants fund projects that advance the PA Water Trail Program's eight guiding principles (partnership, stewardship, volunteerism, education, conservation, community vitality, diversity, and wellness) and that implement actions in the PA Water Trail Program 2025-2029 Strategic Action Plan. Past awards have paid for wayfinding and safety signage, cultural storytelling kiosks, promotional material, updated trail maps and trip itineraries, new and improved access sites, and environmental education for youth and underserved community members. Access can be physical or psychological, so signage, mapping, programming, and website work all qualify alongside ramps and docks. Applicants are encouraged to review the PA Fish and Boat Commission's new Fishing and Boating Access Strategy and must describe how project impact will be measured. Requests run $1,000 to $7,000 with a required 20 percent match of total project cost; no portion of the match may come from DCNR funding or a DCNR-funded project, and total project cost cannot exceed $50,000. Projects must occur on a designated Pennsylvania Water Trail, which includes the Youghiogheny River Water Trail through the H2O service area. An optional virtual pre-application meeting is set for October 5, 2026 at 1:00 PM.
