Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program

Free volunteer training program teaching water quality, stream ecology, wetlands, and stormwater management. Equips citizens to become certified watershed stewards in their home counties.

The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program educates and empowers volunteers to protect Pennsylvania's environmental resources through hands-on training and community service. Participants attend roughly 40 hours of classroom and field instruction covering groundwater, stream ecology, wetlands, soils, geology, native plants, water recreation, climate science, and stormwater management.After completing coursework, stewards contribute 20 hours of volunteer service per year to local watershed protection projects, water quality monitoring, restoration plantings, and public outreach. The program is active across many PA counties and is one of the strongest pipelines for building local watershed-group capacity through citizen science.A modest registration fee covers materials. Watershed groups in Southwestern Pennsylvania can partner with their county Extension office to host trainings, recruit members, and tap a steady supply of trained volunteers for monitoring and restoration work.
